Dave Moss

Dave Moss is a GRAMMY nominated violist who enjoys a vibrant career as a solo artist, chamber musician, and teacher. A graduate of The Juilliard School and Oberlin Conservatory he has gone on to collaborate with Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma and Renée Fleming, as well as performing with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony. He is on faculty of the Arts with Juilliard program at the British International School of Chicago.

Recent collaborations include performances on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Music NOW series and performances with Chicago’s period instrument ensemble Baroque Band. Moss has also been involved with current chamber music performances at Alice Tully Hall, The Kennedy Center, Le Poisson Rouge, Merkin Concert Hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Smithsonian Institute.

With an emphasis on contemporary music, Moss has collaborated with Samuel Adler, Harrison Birtwistle, Peter Eötvös, Mohammed Fairouz, Helmut Lachenmann, and Yehudi Wyner. He has performed with many leading new music ensembles including Axiom Ensemble, The New Juilliard Ensemble, Mimesis Ensemble, and with members of the International Contemporary Ensemble and Continuum.

Moss has performed with The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, The Buffalo Philharmonic, Akron and Canton Symphonies, and as Principal of the New York String Orchestra Seminar. His orchestral experience has also led him to serve as principal violist under James Conlon, James DePreist, Christoph von Dohnányi, Christoph Eschenbach, Alan Gilbert, and Michael Tilson Thomas.

As a passionate proponent of the role of classical music outside the realm of the traditional concert hall, he has led numerous initiatives that have taken him to perform in venues such as New York Subway Stations, Samsung Experience, numerous pubs across Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as the Museum of Sex.

Moss received his Masters degree from The Juilliard School as an Irene Diamond fellow, where his primary teachers included Misha Amory, Heidi Castleman, and Robert Vernon. He earned his Bachelors of Music from The Oberlin Conservatory of Music as a student of Peter Slowik.

His interest in historical performance led him to study with Marilyn McDonald and Catharina Meints at Oberlin Conservatory as well as taking part in the newly formed Historical Performance program at The Juilliard School. He has performed with members of Tafelmusik and Apollo’s Fire. He has also worked with Jane Glover and Jeannette Sorrell.

Moss has performed at The Aspen and Tanglewood Music Festivals (USA), The Spoleto Music Festival (USA), The Pacific Music Festival (Japan), and The Moritzburg Music Festival (Germany). He has also performed internationally on tours throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

Outside of music Moss is an avid runner and outdoor enthusiast. He is also an award winning homebrewer, having won regional and national recognition from the American Homebrewers Association for his Blackberry Stout.
