The Siegel-Schwall Band

THANKING THE BLUES MASTERS

Special thanks: Willie Dixon; Muddy Waters; Howlin' Wolf; Otis Spann; Jimmy Reed; Chuck Berry; Little Walter; Sam Lay; Hubert Sumlin; Lightnin' Hopkins; Elvis; And it goes on. This is a partial list.

You are probably wondering why I gave special thanks to these artists. I sometime feel funny having written a tune that I know was inspired by Jimmy Reed. Almost every time I play a shuffle, even one that I wrote, I think about Jimmy Reed. I think about the time in the 60¹s when I was ecstatically dancing around my parents house listening to a recording of a Jimmy Reed shuffle. ³Jimmy Reed² and ³shuffle² to me are synonymous. So when I write a tune that is a shuffle, I am quite aware that it is really co-written by Jimmy Reed.

And then I think about some other aspects of the tune and I think about Howlin¹ Wolf arrangements and how interesting they are and how they influenced me so much in my writing and arranging. And then there is Billie Holliday¹s singing I don¹t think I play a solo or write a song that doesn¹t have some of her approach in there somewhere.

When I write a song and put together an arrangement I really should give credit to all these other artists but then the writing credit would look something like this: ³Afraid of Love by Corky Siegel, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Billie Holliday, Howlin¹ Wolf, Roland Kirk, and everyone else.² If we want to get really picky I should give credit to every artist and piece of music I ever heard. I leave myself open to music and allow it to influence me.

So I thought the next best thing would just be to thank these great artists on the liner notes. All music has at least some influence on me and most music has a profound influence. So that¹s why I say thank you to those people and add thanks to ³everyone else² who have been a great influence on me and also have influenced the other writers on this project.

A particular artist that comes to mind and was left out of the original liner notes is Louis Jordan for his humorous lyrics and general joyful attitude.
